When it’s time to celebrate the holidays with those you love, you want to be feeling your best.

But as happy as this season can be for some, we know it can also bring feelings of stress, sadness or grief that make it difficult to get into the holiday spirit.

If you’re struggling to feel cheerful during the holidays, here are some strategies you can use to take care of your mental wellbeing so you can get back to having fun with your loved ones.

Talk to people you trust

The holidays are a time for being there for one another. If you’re going through a tough time, it can be tempting to keep negative feelings to yourself so as not to worry others. But remember, you’re not alone, and it’s okay to lean on family or friends for support. If they were struggling, wouldn’t you want to know?

Stay active

Getting fresh air and regular exercise can help boost your mood when you’re feeling down. Spending time outside, even when the weather is cold, can be especially helpful in managing symptoms of seasonal affective disorder, which is a type of depression that commonly sets in during the fall and winter months. If you think you could be experiencing seasonal affective disorder, it’s also a good idea to talk to your health care provider about available treatment options.

Avoid overspending

Gift-giving, decorating, hosting parties and other activities can put a strain on your finances during the holidays. To help manage financial stress, try your hand at giving budget-friendly, homemade gifts, and focus on spending quality time with your loved ones.

Seek help from a licensed behavioral health professional

Your emotional well-being is just as important as your physical wellness. Talking to a behavioral health care provider can be transformative in sustaining positive mental health in any season. A licensed therapist can help you address a broad range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges and more.
